5Rhythms® is a dynamic movement meditation created by visionary soul-sorceress Gabrielle Roth. An amalgamation of shamanism, Tantra, & Zen Buddhism, 5Rhythms® is aimed a one thing & one thing only: freeing the authentic self through discovery, discipline, and expression.
In the 5Rhythms® practice, we move through five stages, or energetics, to connect with & fully embody the totality of life itself. These five energetics--the Rhythms--are Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, & Stillness.
FLOWING: grounded, earthy, cyclical, and nurturing. It's direction is IN.
STACCATO: percussive, containing, expressive, and clear. It's direction is OUT.
CHAOS: wild, released, surrendered, and free. It's direction is DOWN.
LYRICAL: spontaneous, funky, playful, and mysterious. It's direction is UP.
STILLNESS: centered, meditative, connected, and breathful. It's direction is ALL AROUND.
By moving through these five distinct rhythms, and harnessing both the power & wisdom from each one, we set ourselves free into the natural flow of life.
By practicing the 5Rhythms® we can become who we truly are. That is, we can become totally free.
Embodiment is the art & practice of becoming aware of and vitally alive within one’s own body. Most people engage with the world from the top down & from the outside in—that is, head & society before self. Generally, folks relate to their bodies as if they were nothing more than fleshy, animated machines that like food & sex.
But the body is so much more; in fact, the body is all at once the door, the lock, and the key to your becoming. The body, without fail, contains the secret fertilizer for your own personal flowering. It is through embodied practice that a person learns to reorient themselves & experience the world from the bottom up & inside out, thus becoming their own authority.
By conversing with the body, a person frees themself of the tyranny of rationality & begins the journey of becoming a soulful powerhouse intuitive magician of the highest order.
Through dance, freeform movement, somatic meditation, and mindful inquiry, it is possible to uncover the most wildly free, authentically juicy, and holistically true you: ever moving, ever still. At the very least, practice increases vitality, creativity, spontaneity, connectivity, self-awareness, & emotional intelligence.
I currently teach around Europe & the United States. I hold a regular women's class in Zurich, Switzerland, where I reside, & have several upcoming workshops around Europe.
I always include elements of Analytical Psychology, myth, alchemy, and shadow work in my teaching. The dance & the depth psychology are part & parcel for me--they cannot be separated.
It must also be said that for me, teaching is the highest learning I could subject myself too--and surely the most humbling. Thus far, I have found no greater awakening to the complicated, penetrating, messy reality of the dualistic illusion like teaching.
